Lib Dem Islington wins £15 million government housing cash12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Wed 21st Apr 2004 Islington's Liberal Democrat council has won £15 million of government funding for housing regeneration projects in the borough - Islington put in two bids to the London Housing Board (Local Authority Regeneration Schemes) for the Tollington estates and The Guinness Trust put in a bid for the former Hornsey Road swimming baths. The projects won £7.88 million (5th highest amount in London) and £6.77 million respectively (3rd highest amount in London). The works on the Tollington estates will mean major security and environmental improvements and about 20 new homes. The Guinness Trust will use their funding for approximately 60 new housing units on the Hornsey Road site. Councillor Jyoti Vaja, Liberal Democrat Executive Member for Housing & Community Safety, said: "Islington has secured one of the highest allocations of housing regeneration money in the whole of London which is a fantastic achievement for a borough our size. "With Guinness Trust also winning 10% of funding available to all of London's housing associations, this announcement is excellent news for Islington. "Residents should see big improvements in estate security on the Six Acres and Andover Estates and brand new homes on the other side of Hornsey Road."
