Lib Dem council wins award12.00.00am GMT Mon 2nd Dec 2002 Liberal Democrat-controlled Islington Council is celebrating after winning the National Home Improvement Council's annual 'Safety in the Home Award' for innovation in gas safety management. The award was presented to Jyoti Vaja, Lib Dem councillor and Executive member for housing and community safety, for the council's partnership with repairs contractor Caxton Islington at an awards ceremony in London on 26 November. The partnership aims to improve the efficiency of managing gas safety in tenants' homes. Liberal Democrat Cllr Jyoti Vaja, executive member for housing and community safety, who collected the CORGI-sponsored award said: "This Award is another sign that Islington is getting better. It is a tribute to the achievements of teams at Islington Council and Caxton Islington, who are working together to achieve service improvements. "The safety and security of Islington residents is of great importance to us. This partnership is one way we are delivering on our pledge to residents to tackle housing repairs, which have been so neglected by countless Labour administrations." "Islington council is committed to putting people first, and this means centring services around residents. The Award is a ringing endorsement of our strategy, which continually improves the services we offer by working with those best placed to deliver high quality services.
